Cape Cod Restaurant Review: DJ’s

Last Wednesday evening, on our way back to the Palmer House we happened upon a very busy parking lot at Colonial Plaza on Main Street. As it turned out, it was the first night opening of a wonderful new restaurant – DJ’s Famous Wings A Family Sports Pub.

We looked at each other and Bill said, ” Why not stop in.”  We weren’t disappointed. The pub was packed and we happened to run into several friends. We are pleased to report that its menu fills an important gap in Falmouth’s restaurant choices. In the past guests have asked, “Where can we get some good wings and ribs?”  Well, now there is a great place just a mile away from the inn. The menu features Buffalo Hot Wings (of course) and includes classic New England fried seafood, like Shrimp Rolls and Clam Strip Plates. With Pub Grub, Steak Sandwiches, soups salads rounding out the menu there’s something for everyone.

The atmosphere is lively and fun and the wait staff is young and energetic. The design and colors are bright and cheerful and the upper  portion of the  walls are lined with TV’s. Also,  each booth has its own TV. The menu is creative and reasonably priced.

DJ’s is a local, family run, business that was started in Hyannis in June, 1989. They opened that summer boasting that they were the first to bring original-style buffalo wings to Cape Cod. They say, “We were the first wing-joint ever to cross the bridge!” They started as a seven seat eat-in, take-out and delivery hot spot. Soon after opening, they expanded the menu to include bone-sucking ribs, specialty sandwiches and daily specials.

In 2004 they relocated to a more spacious location in Hyannis and became the a sports bar. That is when the name was changed to DJ’s Family Sports Pub. Their award-winning wings are what made them famous but now the full menu is outstanding. It is fun, inventive, fresh and delicious. Every item is cooked to order and all of the food is prepared freshly every day.

Now in March of 2013 their second location on Falmouth’s Main Street has opened. One of more creative things that they have started is:

  3. You must eat the meat off the bone, no hand picking.
  4. You must eat them in ten minutes.
  5. You may not drink anything.
  6. You may not use napkins or wipe your face.
  7. You must lick your fingers clean.
  8. You must wait five minutes after eating.

Your rewards for completing this task are: The wings are free, you get your photo on the “Wall of Flame” and  you get a commemorative “Angry Wings” T-shirt.

Location, Location

One of the best things about this vibrant new pub, is its location. It is just steps from the Falmouth Commodore’s Baseball Field. I can just see this place after the games next summer. It will be packed.

From all of us at a Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast, we wish you all a happy and healthy Easter weekend.

The Palmer House Inn is open and we are decorated for this joyous holiday. Give us a call and join us for a few days. You can take advantage of our Spring Break Special. The Main Street shops in Falmouth Village are decorated and all of the fine restaurants are open. As always the Easter Bunny will be here on Saturday to oversee the Easter Egg Roll on the library lawn and after the Roll’s festivities, she will be meeting with the little ones on her thrown on the stage at Peg Noonan Park.

Spring has arrived, the snow drops and crocus are in bloom. The grass is beginning to get greener. The days are getting longer and warmer.  The breezes are softer and the birds are returning from the south land. The outside work at the Inn has begun in preparation for the busy high season.  Cape Cod is waking up after its long winter’s nap.

After a short trip to the west coast in January to visit family, Bill and I have spent the quiet season polishing, painting and otherwise preparing, Our quaint Cape Cod bed and breakfast is ready to welcome for the new season. As spring progresses we are rested and ready to go. I have been experimenting in the kitchen and have made a few new additions to our menu offerings but the old favorites will still be served. Remember, if you do have a favorite Palmer House Inn, breakfast that you remember form a prior stay, just let us know when you are booking your reservation and we will do our best to make your wish come true.

There will be a few other changes for the 2013 season. Bill has decided to take on a new role during our the morning service. As much as he enjoys cooking, his plan is that he will no longer be behind the kitchen counter but will be more available to the guests. He will be in the office and around the common areas and will be free to chat with guests, to answer questions about day trips, issue bicycles, sell ferry tickets or print boarding passes.

For those of you who came to know and enjoy the pleasant personalities of  our lovely 2012 housekeeping staff, we have kept in contact them in Romania and Bulgaria and many of them will be returning in May and June, just in time for warm weather.

Monca, Stanislava, Geargiana and Ciprianna add such joy and youthful enthusiasm to the inn’s service and charm. The personal touch is what innkeeping is all about. We have also added a new person to the front desk staff. Her name is Mimi and she will be with us year round. She is a warm and energetic New Englander. She has lived in Falmouth for a number of years, and she knows all of the best places to visit and dine. She is also an artist who exhibits throughout Cape Cod. We are looking forward to the new dimension that she will be adding to our Cape Cod bed and breakfast experience.

The Treasure Chest

You will always find a pleasant smile and warm hospitality when entering The Treasure Chest Shop at number 233 on Falmouth’s Main Street. The shop is divided into two sections. The front section is devoted primarily to the latest fashions highlighted in the storefront windows. The gallery in the rear of the shop showcases some of the  Cape Cod region’s finest art work and crafts. The Treasure Chest offers a wide array of outstanding gifts, and great values for you and your home.

The owner, Janice Chafin, opened the Main Street shop just a year ago and this year has gone very well. Janice has told us that she knew that the summer season would be busy, but that she thinks the best thing about being on Main Street is that Falmouth is an active community throughout the year and there are always people walking on Main Street even during the winter months.

Prior to the shops move to Main Street, The Treasure Chest had been located on Worcester Court in Falmouth, where Janice sold woman’s apparel and toys in addition to the art work and housewares  While at the Worcester Court location, Janice’s shop did so well that she decided he needed more  floor space. With the move to Main Street some changes were made. First, Janice as a love for fashion, so she made the decision to increase her ladies clothing lines and to drop the toys. The clothing in the store features every day casual outfits, colorful or basic separates and stunning classic dresses that would be perfect for a Cape Cod evening affair.

Along with the move Janice created a separate business out of the Art Gallery. She gave it its own name, Chafin Art Gallery and it features twenty-two artists. She is delighted to report that the art gallery has become so popular that she now has a waiting list. An added bonus is that when people want to go to the gallery, they walk through the Treasure Chest. This  allows more people to become familiar with both businesses. One of the clever things that she  has done to transition from one business to the other, is the inclusion of a line of “Tres Chic Furniture”. The furniture is restored older pieces that have been painted in white and the most delightful colors. The chic furniture is used throughout the showroom to display dinnerware and stemware, linens, candles, jewelry, hand bags, handmade soaps and other accessories delightful accessories.

Janice does not just rely on foot traffic, she has created the “Summer Artist Series”. This features one artist and his/her work for a week with a “meet and greet cocktail reception” on Thursday evenings. These are catered by her next door neighbor, Mark Cilfone and his friendly staff from La Cucinna Sul Mare. Along the same lines, Janice has brought in”Fashion Trunk” shows that allow the Treasure Chest customers to preview the next season’s clothing lines and there are always show specials.

The Treasure Chest and Chafin Art Gallery is a welcome addition to our charming Cape Cod downtown.  When you come to visit be sure to stop in, be sure to say hello to Janice and her staff.

The Treasure Chest and Chafin Art Gallery are located a short walk from the Palmer House Inn. While you are staying at the Inn, stay in the Henry James Penthouse to view Harrison’s “Portrait of a Beauty” or the cozy Herman Melville Room to view original drawings by P.L. O’Connell.
