The Clam Shack

For those of you who want the true Cape Cod food experience, in Falmouth, we have the Clam Shack of Falmouth. It is located at the very end of Scranton Avenue at the entrance of Falmouth Harbor. It is Falmouth rustic dining at it’s best. It does not have a bar or even a liquor license, just coffee, tea, bottled water or a variety of soft drinks. You will not find fine china, napkins or elegant eating utensils. Your meal is served on a plastic tray, in a paper basket or plate. Plastic knives, forks and spoons are provided with paper napkins. The atmosphere is casual although shoes and shirts are required. It is literally a shack made of weathered boards. with fishing and lobstering artifacts hung from the rafters to add to the nautical surroundings. The menu is written on a chalk board.

The specialty of the house are the “Plates”. They have clam (with or without the bellies), scallop, shrimp and fish & chips plates. the plates consist of an overflowing portion of the clams, shrimp,or scollops; fries and coleslaw.  However, for those in your party, who do not want seafood, the kitchen also has wings and chicken tenders plates. Hamburgers, cheese burgers and franks are also offered.

What would an, on the water, Cape Cod restaurant be without lobster, clam and scrimp rolls? The Clam Shack has them all.  In addition the clam chowder is excellent as are the onion rings. Your group has a choice of dining inside or out on the dock where the schooner Liberte is docked from the July fourth weekend to Labor Day weekend. Perhaps the best compliment to the tasty food is the view. One can sit at a wooden picnic tables and watch the activities on bustling Falmouth Harbor.

On nautical charts, the harbor is known as Falmouth Inner Harbor. It is mostly a man-made harbor with a mean low water depth of 10 feet. In 1907 an inlet was created through a barrier beach that divided a fresh water pond from Nantucket Sound. Engineers dredged and widened the harbor to give it the rectangular shape that it has today. This harbor is a wonderfully protected location for boaters to weather one of our legendary coastal storms.

Five marinas and many fishing boats are located along the harbor and the Island Queen ferry-boat to Martha’s Vineyard is docked on the eastern side. The Island Queen runs from early June through to Columbus Day.

Fishermen come from all over to use the harbor as a jumping-off location for fishing trips to the Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard sound inshore fishing grounds as well as offshore grounds. One of the best known local fishing fleets is the Patriot Party Boats that sail out of the harbor. They specialize in deep-sea fishing, bottom fishing and sport fishing.  For more info: www.patriotpartyboats.com or call: 508-548-2626.

La Cucina sul Mare

An Evening at La Cucina sul Mare, a Cape Cod Southern Italian Restaurant

La Cucina is one of the most popular restaurants on Falmouth’s Main Street. It’s owned and run by Mark and Cynthia Cilfone.

“Reminiscent of an evening in Italy, La Cucina Sul Mare is a dining experience not easily forgotten. The flavors of the authentic foods of Italy and the Mediterranean, will have you longing to come back again and again!”

Delicious and healthy plate at the bar... with a glass of chardonnay.
This is E.J. serving a delicious and healthy gorgonzola salad at the bar… with  glass of chardonnay.

Signature dishes prepared by chef/owner Mark Cilfone, include a classic Lasagna al Forno, Braised Lamb Shanks, Osso Buco, Lobster fra Diavolo over Linguini,  Rigotoni a la Vodka, Chicken Parmesan and Veal Piccata to name but a few.

The atmosphere is as warm and inviting as the summer sun in Italy. The walls are decorated with hand painted murals that remind one of the old country. The painted terracotta tin ceilings and picture windows overlooking our bustling Main Street and Peg Noonan Park across the way add to the warm festive feeling as one enters. The best part is that La Cucina is just a pleasant ten minute stroll from the Palmer House Inn.

When our oldest daughter Erin and her husband Rick come to visit we enjoy walking  down to Main Street. We usually stop at La Cucina for our evening meal. Rick and Bill order the Pan Seared Tenderloin. It is an eight ounce filet mignon served with a portabella mushroom Madiera sauce with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The filet is always done to perfection. Erin usually orders the Pollo Marsala. It is a lightly pounded breast of chicken that is floured, sauteed with shallots and mushrooms and finished in a classic Marsala wine sauce then served over angel hair pasta. I have two favorites the Stuffed Pork Loin is so good. The pork is cut thinly and rolled with ricotta, imported prosciutto, mushrooms and spinach and is served with mashed sweet potatoes. However, when I am in the mood for seafood, I order the Zuppa de Pesce. This dish is served in a large frying pan and consists of a medley of seafood, sauteed in olive oil and garlic and finished with a white wine tomato,  seafood broth over linguine. Erin and I find it difficult to resist La Cucina’s desserts.  She enjoys the cannolis as I relax with a cappuccino and the very best biscotti that I have ever eaten. Their pastry chef is truly an artist.

We especially enjoy Sunday evenings at La Cucina when they have live music. Bill and I enjoy reminiscing as our old favorites are played while we sip our limoncello.

C Salt

C Salt's Sesame Seared Salmon

C Salt Wine Bar & Grill opened at 75 Davis Straits Road in Falmouth, last year during the height of the summer season. Immediately, Bill and I started to hear positive comments about the food from guests and friends. In March of this year we decided to give it a try. We were pleasantly surprised. C Salt is not the typical Cape Cod eatery. The food is up scale, elegantly prepared and plated but the atmosphere is casual. Diners can go there in sandals and jeans if they like, a dress code we affectionately call “Cape Cod Casual”. The prices are moderate and the food is fresh and the presentation, up scale. Jon Phillips, the executive chef/owner describes the food as, Modern American with Asian and French influences.

Jon and his wife Jill work well together. Jill oversees the dining room while Jon works in the kitchen. John and Jill share the same work ethic. They enjoy trying new dishes and sampling wines together. Their passion for the work shows in the finished product. The restaurant is beautifully designed and  has a comfortable, relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Crispy Thai Calamari
Crispy Thai Calamari

There is something for everyone on C Salt’s menu.  There are composed seafood dishes like the “Sesame Seared Salmon” that is served with roasted new potatoes, spicy Asian snap peas with mushrooms and red bell peppers, Lime Cilantro Beurre Blanc,  Chili Oil and cilantro.  In addition there are beef offerings such as the USDA “prime” Flat Iron Steak that is grilled and topped with blue cheese butter, grilled asparagus, hand cut fritters tossed in sea salt. In April our daughter came to visit with our six year old grandson, Michael. The little guy was completely satisfied when he ordered one of Jon’s thin crust flat breads.

Without a doubt our favorite C Salt dish is the calamari. We were pleased to discover that it is not the traditional calamari with the heavy batter that is served with marinara sauce. Jon’s version is a new interpretation on the old favorite. The calamari ringlets are dipped in a light batter and fried, it is combined with baby spinach, cashews, mangos and pea shoots, then it is tossed with a hot and sour dressing. One can definitely taste the Asian influence in this dish.

The Falmouth chef community is an outstanding group of talented people. When Jon was deciding on the type of  bread to serve, he went to Falmouth Village’s Maison Villatte (0ne of our 12 Great Sidewalk Cafes). The boulangerie developed a wonderful bread for C Salt. It is topped with sea salt and when it is served warm with whipped butter, it is delicious.
