The newest restaurant to open on Main Street’s “International Restaurant Row”, is the Bear in Boots Gastropub.
They opened last May and are a welcome addition. The owners Kate and Gates Rickard are both graduates of Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, where they met. As students, they both wanted to own their own business and they both wanted to travel. After graduation the traveling came first. They worked in Switzerland, Belgium and England. After years of working and traveling they decided to settle in Falmouth and open the business of their dreams. The restaurant is a compilation of the aspects of the couples life together. Bear in Boots Gastropub is a warm, comfortable, beautifully designed place where visitors and Cape Codders alike can enjoy comfort food, done with skill usually reserved for fine dining restaurants.
They like to say that their food is, from the farm to table comfort food. Kate and Gates brag that they do not own a can opener, a freezer or a microwave. They do all of their own butchering and make their own sausage, pasta, bread, ice cream, cakes, ketchup, drink mixers and mayonnaise. They do this not because they are fancy but because they want their guests to enjoy good food.
I took myself out to lunch last week. It was a beautiful day and I treated myself to one of their Watermelon and Pea Green Salads and a glass of freshly squeezed lemonade. Talk about a refreshing meal, on a warm summer’s afternoon. The salad had sliced radish, crisp fennel, marinated feta in a mint vinaigrette.
Last evening Bill and I decided to try out their burgers and fries. For some reason I always start with the pickle. My first comment was, “This is a really good pickle.” Bill agreed and he chomped into his pickle. The meal was up hill all of the way from there. We always order our beef medium rare. Seldom can we say that it is cooked to perfection but in this case it was perfect. The fries and house made ketchup were excellent with just enough salt and the tomato tasted as if it had just been picked. Yes, this is comfort food at its best.
Later I read that chef Gates grinds his own blend of beef for those 9 oz. burgers. His attention to detail truly shows.
I have also read that only steaks with the best marbling touch his grill. I have been told that these fine cuts create a melt in your mouth experience. We will have to try the Grilled Ribeye on our next visit. That is, a 13oz grilled steak that is served with wild mushroom demi-glaze, Yucon gold mashed potatoes and sautéed asparagus.
At their beautiful designed bar they serve twenty varieties of wine and eighteen beers on tap. Both the beer and wine are available in tastings of four. They also serve table beers, which are comparable in size and ABV to a bottle of wine. They also have soups, pizzas, sandwiches and scrumptious deserts including house made ice cream.
