The Farmer’s Market is located at Marina Park on Cranston Avenue, near the harbor, in Falmouth. It is less than a fifteen minute walk from the Palmer House Inn. The market was established in 2008. It features Cape Cod and southern Massachusetts grown and artistically crafted vegetables, fruits, lobsters, breads, pies, honey, oils, pastas, jellies, jams, honey, freshly caught or smoked fish, herbs, flowers, eggs and ornamentals, not to mention local sea-salt that is made by Cape Cod’s sun, wind and sea. The participants also hold one-day markets in November and December.

On Thursday mornings it is fascinating to watch as the market tents are erected and crates  vegetables are briskly unloaded and arranged on tables. Then promptly at eleven AM, the cow bell is rung and the shopping begins.

Local Massachusetts cheeses that are available are Great Hill Blue, Long Lane Farm goat cheese, Shy Brothers’ Hannahbells and Cloumage. Also, Fromage a Trois mozzarella, string cheese and burratas will be available. In addition, freshly made pastas are available including pea-tendril fettucine, pappardelle and ravioli.

To add a bit of variety, potted plants can be purchased. There are potted herbs, cat nip, starter plants for gardens such as mixed lettuces and hanging containers of “Cut & Grow” salad greens. One will also find calla lilies and lavender from Peachtree Circle Farm and hydrangea from Da Silva Farm. Pies a la Mode will be selling cookies, tarts, and cool summer drinks including fresh strawberry lemonade. Pain D’Avignon will have breads and pastries. The White Lion Baking Company will have gluten-free treats and Great Cape Baking Company will  have doughnuts and fruit nuggets.

During the summer months I enjoy strolling down town to buy herbs, vegetables and flowers for the inn’s breakfasts.

While all of our rooms have their own individual charm, we recommend the Harriet Beecher Stowe room or the Emily Dickinson room. Both rooms feature comfortable king beds, fireplaces, jetted tubs and a relaxing stay before and after your market-going adventures.
