Palmer House Inn History

About Our Victorian Cape Cod B&B

First built in 1901 as a Queen Anne Victorian by a wealthy ship-owner as a gift for his wife, it retains its grace and architectural elegance from its copper-topped turret to its wicker-furnished porches bordered by fragrant rhododendrons and azaleas. The back part of the inn was added in 1996 and was carefully crafted to architecturally complement the original house.

In addition to twelve guest rooms in its main house, The Palmer House Inn features four rooms in its historic carriage house (one of them ADA friendly) as well as a quaint three-room cottage hidden in its own secret garden behind a tall evergreen hedge. The buildings are set on nearly an acre of gardens with roses, cottage garden beds, flowering cherry trees, dogwoods, hydrangeas and hostas, bordered by firs, arborvitae, hollies and junipers that ensure privacy in any season. Year after year, loyal guests return to the inn and profess their love for its unspoiled character, for the beauty of its grounds and for its scrumptious home-cooked breakfasts.

Falmouth’s Historic District gives you a glimpse into a bygone era. While walking along its sidewalks bordered by immaculate white picket fences, you might reasonably expect to encounter Thornton Wilder or Emily Dickinson. A five minute walk brings you past the Village Green and the Congregational Church to our bustling downtown lined with tempting restaurants, upscale boutiques, spas that spoil you, bakeries and confectioners with more pastries, chocolate, candy and ice cream than any one person can be expected to handle!

From the historic downtown area you can continue your walk heading due south and travel through a charming residential neighborhood of traditional Cape Cod homes set among flowering shrubs and picket fences. Within ten minutes, you will arrive at beautiful Surf Drive Beach, with its warm summer ocean waters, scenic vistas, glorious sunsets and gentle waves.

Aside from shopping and eating, Falmouth offers plenty of entertainment in season. There’s theatre, opera, golf, bike riding, yachting, deep sea fishing, museums and of course, ferry boat rides to Martha’s Vineyard, a deservedly favorite destination of generations of visitors, poets, authors, movie stars, presidents and international royalty.

During the fall, winter and early spring seasons, you will find an array of planned events and holiday-related activities. October’s Jazz-Tober, Halloween with its spooktastic Village of Scarecrows, Holidays by the Sea with its music stroll, parade and festively decorated and lit Village Green, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s celebrations bring visitors to Falmouth year after year.
