Twenty thirteen marks the ten year anniversary of the Black Dog General Store coming to Falmouth’s Main Street. The store shares “an appreciation for tradition, a love of the sea and all things authentically New England. Falmouth and Chatham offer Main Streets that are quintessentially New England.” -Black Dog General Store. Shoppers will find ship artifacts, photographs telling the story of the origins of New England, and of course, the legendary T-shirts and heavyweight hoodie sweatshirts featuring the black dog graphic.

Newly Renovated for 2013

The store was shut down for several weeks this past winter for renovations. The goal of the remodeling was to reinvigorate the the Maritime heritage of the Douglas Family within the store’s decor and create a relaxed shopping atmosphere.

Falmouth is also host to Cape Cod’s Black Dog Business Headquarters. Also, many of the Black Dog staff live, work and play in our community. The organization enjoys participating in Falmouth activities. To name a few: the annual Holidays by the Sea Parade and the sponsorship of the Falmouth Commodores in addition to working with many local organizations on fundraising efforts. This year they will be partnering with Friends of Falmouth Dog and the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce to bring family-friendly events to our town. Enriching the community that they live in is an important part of the heritage that was instilled in the staff by the founder Captain Rob Douglas Sr.

The Black Dog Tavern

The Black Dog Tavern opened on Martha’s Vineyard January 1, 1971. The Tavern was built to foster a sense of year round community on the island by bringing good food and friends together. The tavern was named after captain Douglas’ canine companion, Black Lab/Boxer mix that was actually born in Falmouth, and yes, her name was Black Dog. Her silhouette is found on the tavern’s crew T-shirt and rapidly became a coveted item for visitors to the establishment. Today customers can still purchase the classic Black Dog T-shirt, to commemorate a visit to the tavern.

Many guests who stay at the Palmer House take a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard. During that visit be sure to visit the Tavern. It is serving up hearty breakfasts and lunches daily, and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We are looking forward to checking out their outdoor seating, live music and family events a little bit later in the Spring.

While all of our rooms have their own New England charm, we’d recommend the Henry David Thoreau Cottage, or the Harriet Beecher Stowe Room, with a jetted tub and cozy fireplace you might just decide to stay in.
