The Truro Vineyards are ready for the  harvest

David Roberts Jr., Truro Vineyard’s wine maker is feeling good  about this year’s harvest. They have had a great growing season.   The vineyard is located just off Route 6A and is a pleasant day trip from the Palmer House.

Three types of grapes are grown on the estate: Cabernet franc, chardonnay, and a bit of Merlot. The property has been producing wine since 1994. The operation was expanded in 2007 when Roberts’ family bought the vineyard.

Each year they try to improve the quality of the wines and the growing techniques.

Equally important has been improving the wine tasting experience. The vineyard boasts a new open-air tasting shelter with tables where tasting is held.

This year they are offering 13 different wines.Roberts is especially proud of the estate wines, which are made entirely from grapes grown on the property. ( to increase their variety of wine offerings grapes are procured from California, New York and Massachusetts.)

All of the wine produced is made and aged at the vineyard in the barrel room, were massive oak casks are stacked to the ceiling.

The center piece of the vineyard, which is populated with beautiful old trees, is an early 19th century Federal house that serves as the vineyard’s retail wine shop. The house was featured twice by famed artist Edward Hopper.

Truro Vineyards is geared towards visitors with free daily tours of the property and wine tastings offered every half-hour.

This Sunday, Sept. 19 is a great time to visit, as the vineyard will host its annual Grape Stomping and Jazz Festival. Billed as the finale to the Truro Treasures festival weekend. Roberts says the Sunday event is a fun occasion where one can sip wines by the glass and enjoy food, crafts and music.
