We went to Liam’s a recently. Falmouth is home to the one and only Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub. Established in 1994 by Liam and Deborah Maguire, the pub quickly became a local favorite and, of course, the center of celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day.

“Liam, raised in Castle Derg, Co Tyrone, has traveled Europe, Canada, and the United Sates as a professional entertainer for over thirty years. His rich baritone voice captivates audiences and draws even the most reluctant participant in with lively pub songs.” The entertainment at Liam’s features regular bands, Irish music and quiz nights year round.

Our bartender for the evening was Rory, he is 6’6″ and is Liam and Deb’s older son. He makes the best Irish coffee – not too bitter, not too sweet, and just the right kick 😉

The Menu

The menu at this Cape restaurant includes all the favorite pub grub you expect from Nachos and Potato Skins, to Fish & Chips and shepherd’s pie. They also feature a few twists on old favorites like Gaelic Grille Cheese and Grilled Salmon Sandwiches. Whenever my daughter comes to visit she insists on stopping by for a pint and a bowl of beef stew.

The restaurant has delicious “sweet potato fries” and we really like the “Irish egg rolls.”

Last year a family of 6 adults checked into  the inn. Their first question was, “Where can we get a great lobster roll?” I suggested Liam’s. They were very pleased and were still talking about their feast at breakfast the following morning.

While all of our rooms have their own individual charm, we recommend the Harriet Beecher Stowe room or the Emily Dickinson room. Both rooms feature comfortable king beds, fireplaces, jacuzzi-style tubs and a relaxing stay before and after the pub.

The Pickle Jar Kitchen a Restaurant Review

Number 170 Main Street is one of the most charming buildings in Falmouth’s downtown. Also known as the “Weeks Building”, it is unique because of its lovely bowed windows with small panes of glass and its sunny yellow color. It is one of the older buildings on Main Street that still has its original appearance. It was built in the 1920’s and currently houses “Twigs”, “Homespun Gardens” gift shops and “Lemon/Lime” Salon (Falmouth shops map).  The new kid in the building will be, the “Pickle Jar Kitchen”. It is planned to be a new creative cafe. The owners are Elisabeth & Kevin Lay and Benjamin & Cassandra Gallant. The Gallants and Lays are Falmouth residents and they are fulfilling a dream that was hatched during gatherings in their home kitchens, that involved cooking and in many cases pickling. Their interest in pickles is that they involve combining sweet, salty, and savory flavors in one.

The Lays and Gallants will count on their experience as executive chefs at other Cape restaurants that include Bleu, The Belfry Inn, and Masaki. They plan to create a fresh, casual,  fun and affordable dining environment. The Lays and the Gallants believe that a good meal should start with wholesome natural ingredients and be served in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Whether a diner wants to sit and enjoy a relaxing meal or just grab a quick snack and beverage for the road, the Pickle Jar Kitchen will be ready to fill the bill. Ingredients include farm fresh eggs, vegetarian hash, smoked bacon, quinoa, and of a variety of “house” made pickles.

The eatery will also feature pastries, cookies, and other baked goods from the “Butterqueen Cakes” of East Falmouth. Special orders are available upon request for cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods.Upon your request the chefs will also prepare assorted sandwich platters, large salad bowels, Plowman’s Pickle Platters, roasted meat platters or jumbo loaded fries for take-out. The emphasis is on wholesome food with natural ingredients in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The Pickle Jar Kitchen’s interior has been completely redesigned with a new modern theme that features rich wood tones, soft green walls with red accents, new lighting, clean furniture lines, interesting kitchen antiques and old photos on the walls complete the design. On February 6th the restaurant opened at seven in the morning and is serving a variety of tasty breakfast and lunch fare, Wednesday through Monday. Some of the future planned events will be: beer and wine dinners, fresh pickle workshops, and an array of fun-filled events throughout the year.

The Pickle Jar Kitchen is just a pleasant seven minute stroll from the Palmer House Inn. Bill and I took that walk this morning. The inn was empty so we had a rare opportunity to experience someone else’s breakfast fare. The food was excellent.

Bill had the “Ultimate Hash”. It was served in an iron frying pan that was placed on a wooden base at the table. The hash was topped with two perfectly poached eggs and a light cheddar cheese sauce.  It was quite delicious. I ordered the house made oatmeal, it was topped with blueberry compote and sliced granny Smith apples. I put a little half and half on top and had a delightfully warm meal on this cold New England morning. We are looking forward to trying their lunch menu later this week.
