Thanksgiving Apple Pie

Thanksgiving Apple Pie

A delightful pie made with tart apples. This pie has become a Thanksgiving tradition in our house and has passed down to our daughters. Now our grandchildren gather each year to make their pies.

Makes 1 pie.

  • Pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
  • 3/4 Cup white sugar

  • 1/8 Tsp salt
  • 1 Tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 Tsp ground nutmeg
  • 6-7 McIntosh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 Tbls butter
  • Egg white

Thanksgiving Apple Pie Directions:

In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. As you cut the apples place them into the bowl and coat with the mixture.

Butter on the Thanksgiving Apple Pie

Butter on the apple pie.

Carefully place the apple slices flat into the pie plate. Be sure to use the broken apple pieces to fill in any holes as you layer the slices and fill the pie plate. This will help to ensure the pie is filled and keep it from settling. Pour the syrup from the bowl on top of the apples then dot with butter. Cover with the top pie crust. Seal the edges and cut your own pattern of vents in the top. Brush top of pie with egg whites and sprinkle with a little sugar.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Lower the temperature to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 40 minutes. Serve warm.

Note: sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of Irish whiskey onto the filling before placing the top crust for an extra zing to your pie.
