A Cape Cod Holiday Walk

A Wonderful Cape Cod Holiday Holly Walk December 7th

Join us for a guided stroll through the Ashumset Holly Wildlife Sanctuary.

Bill and I have been members of the Massachusetts Audubon Society for eight years. We have truly enjoyed their publications, emails and visiting the sanctuaries throughout Cape Cod and eastern Massachusetts. We have found their information especially interesting during the spring and fall seasons when many species of birds fly over the Cape while on their migration.

Falmouth is fortunate to have the Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in East Falmouth on the Mashpee town line. On Saturday December 7th. from 1:00 – 2:30 pm, Sanctuary director Ivan Ives will conduct a “Holly Walk” to celebrate the season. The guided walk is free for Mass Audubon members and supporters of Long Pasture and the Mid and Upper Cape sanctuaries. However, guests are welcome to accompany me on the walk. Each person will receive a locally grown bough of holly to decorate your home.

Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary has sixty-five varieties of holly trees that are planted throughout the Sanctuary.  While walking the trails with director Ives, you will hear the inside story of how the unique sanctuary came into existence.

The diversity of holly trees at Ashumet Holly is the legacy of Wilfred Wheeler who saved many American holly species from destruction on the Cape. His work spanned the years from 1930 – 1961. Wheeler was considered one of the most knowledgeable horticulturists on Cape Cod. Landscapers, gardeners, botanists, and horticulturists sought his advice for many years.

The walk with director will also feature a fascinating inside look at the Mass Audubon Society’s ground breaking work with wetlands restoration at Ashumet Holly Sanctuary.  In addition, you will learn about the “Eastern Spadefoot Toad Restoration Project”. This secretive and endearing native Cape Cod toad is an endangered species and you will learn about what Mass Audubon Society is doing to save it from extinction.
