Create a Community Mosaic Mural with Jim Bowen
Community mosaic muralist Jim Bowen will share his time-tested methods in designing and implementing a project for permanent display. You will be an integral part of the process of creating a mural that will be permanently installed in a public space on Cape Cod. Even if you’ve never nipped a piece of tile, you can participate in this unique experience. Jim will guide you every step of the way with personal attention. And when you are finished, you will have the knowledge to be able to create your own mosaic at home! (The actual location for the mural has not yet been determined. Several prominent spaces are under consideration.) $225 for 2-day workshop. Space is limited, so sign up early.

This exciting course will introduce students to the beauty, history and versatility of this unique handmade material. Students will learn the differences and similarities between Mexican and Italian cut smalti. We will cover basic design, layout and visual understanding of the material while creating a smalti work of art, using both ancient and contemporary cutting techniques. Each student will learn how to work with the hammer and hardie, as well as gain an understanding of how to use modern cutting tools. This is a fulfilling learning experience for artists in all mediums and of all levels. The two-day workshop is $285 plus $30 for all materials and supplies. Pique assiette is the term used to describe the style of mosaic that uses broken china and found art such as beads, shells, and glass. During this two-day workshop, we will utilize the direct method of applying broken china used to form a mosaic. We may mix some stained glass into your mirror, which you will also learn to cut. You will also learn how to decoupage paper such as an old photo and place it under glass. Bring in some of your treasures from home to incorporate into a memory mirror. Students will learn how to cut and shape china and stained glass along with which adhesive to use to create and finish a mirror of art to display in the home or give as a gift. The two-day workshop is $225 plus $30 for all materials and supplies, including handouts and a mirror substrate.

Working in Reverse: a Workshop in the Indirect Technique with Cynthia Fisher

In this intensive 3-day workshop, students will learn how to create a mosaic backsplash, make a tabletop or choose to develop their own project, working in the indirect method. The numerous benefits of working indirectly will be fully presented. The class begins with a brief historical overview of mosaic and a discussion on the various methods of constructing a mosaic, materials, tools and substrates. Learn about color and the mosaic palette; how tile shape creates visual texture; the way laying patterns (opus) affects overall mosaic design; and much more. Come with an idea of what you would like to portray, be it realistic, abstract, or decorative, or find inspiration from one of the artist’s mosaic source books. This workshop is ideal for those who have some experience in mosaics OR for those who are willing to jump right in on an ambitious first project.
